Hebrew blessing for self-acceptance

Self-Acceptance -

Sheasani kirtzono

Printer-Friendly Version

Originally this blessing was shelo asani isha - an expression of thanks (by a Jewish male) for not being created a woman, and was perhaps developed to impugn the Christian view that in the Mashiach there is "neither Jew nor Gentile, bond nor free, male nor female" (Gal. 3:28). However, this correlative blessing recited by the Jewish female (sheasani kirtzono) shows promise as a blessing of self-acceptance, and surely agrees with Rav Sha'ul's statement that "by the grace of God I am what I am" (1 Cor. 15:10).

Blessed art Thou, LORD our God, Master of the universe,
Who made me according to His will.

Barukh attah Adonai eloheinu melekh ha-olam,
she'asani kirtzono.
