Why is there evil?

In the Hebraic mindset, where did evil come from? God did not create evil, and yet it exists. Is evil His absence within spiritual beings?

Of course your question is enormously complex, though in general moral evil is regarded as a byproduct of "free will" (bechirah chofshit), whereas natural evil is regarded as an inscrutable test or trial of some kind.... Jewish theology strongly emphasizes the role of the will in relation to the presence of evil. It was Augustine, who followed Plato and the Manichaeists, who taught evil was an ontological "deprivation," and that idea was generally picked up by the Christian church tradition in the West.
