What about the Hebraic Roots Bible?

Postby Guest » Thu Jun 07, 2012 2:07 pm

Have you heard anything about this new Hebraic Roots Bible? Sounds interesting, but I’m wondering if it’s reliable.

Of course the original New Testament MSS dating back to the 1st century are all written in Koine Greek, and certainly NOT Aramaic (the NT translation of the Aramaic Peshitta dates from the 5th century). It is likely there was a Hebrew Gospel of Matthew, since Eusebius (263-339) mentions its existence, but we have nothing but his statement to go on here - no actual manuscript has ever been found, and even if it was later discovered, that would not change the fact that all the epistles were clearly written in Greek. We have to remember how Hellenistic this period of history was... Jewish thought was heavily influenced by the Greeks and Alexandria was a hub of great Jewish thought during the Second Temple period (Alexandria was named after Alexander the Great, the ancient Hellenizer of the middle east). Moreover, during the time of Jesus, Sepphoris (now Tzippori) was a major Greek-speaking city that was walking distance from Nazareth. Paul had the vision of the universal gospel message in mind and that motivated his missionary activities and clearly used Koine Greek to speak his message to all the world. And so on.

Ironically enough, the so-called "Hebraic Roots Bible" is based not on Hebrew (which was a spoken language during the Second Temple period that was used liturgically at the synagogues and at the Temple), but rather Aramaic... I tend to be suspicious of religious groups that contend the "church" is an evil institution that has bastardized the message of the gospel, suppresed the Sacred Name, etc. Indeed, the entire Messianic movement owes its existence to the church and its teachings over the centuries...
