Forgiveness vs. Repentance

Postby Guest » Tue Jul 05, 2011 3:28 pm

I am increasingly running into a "Christian" tide of believers who have supplanted "forgiveness" where "repentance" resides in Scripture. By that I mean these folks take a "no-fault" and "non-interference" approach to their preaching the gospel. Which is to say they have no personal testimony or word to offer concerning the necessity of repentance, only forgiveness. It is as if the word "repentance" has been expunged from their vocabulary.

When I bring this up with them, they quote Jesus forgiveness from the cross; that it's not up to us to judge; that we need to remove the plank from our own eye, etc., etc.

Would you please speak to this matter from your perspective.

Thank you and God Bless...

Shalom and thanks for writing. Yes, this trend in Christian preaching tends to cheapen God's grace by removing the offense from sin... Sin, of course, is not simply "missing the mark," but is an act of treason against the love and kindness of God.... There really can be no genuine forgiveness apart from repentance.

I have written a good deal about teshuvah on the Hebrew4Christians site, particularly in relation to the month of Elul and preparation for the High Holidays. You can read some of this here:

And so on. I hope that helps a bit.
