The word Baal (בַּעַל) simply means "lord," "owner," or even "husband," and it may or may not refer to deities. This is similar to the word Elohim, by the way. Baal worship is primarily a Canaanite form of cult worship, though it perhaps has its roots in ancient Babylonia (the god Bel). Any good history of the ancient Near East should include information about it.
