Bible translations

Postby lpagirl » Tue Jul 15, 2008 1:05 pm

Hi John and Everyone! :hullo:

Please forgive my ignorance, but the only way to learn is to ask questions... Can you tell me if English speaking Jewish persons read the Scriptures only in Hebrew or if they have English translations? Also, if they do use translations, can you tell me the "name" of the book I should be looking for? I am curious to know how what they are using compares to English versions of the "Old Testament". :thanks:

It's really all over the place. Not all Jewish people read the Hebrew text of the Scriptures. There are English translations of the Torah and "Old Testament" published by various Jewish publishers. One of the best is artscoll.com. There is the JPS translation of the OT as well as the Tanakh update (also from JPS). David Stern used the older JPS translation for his "Complete Jewish Bible."
